Yes they are! Here are a couple reasons:

First - Over 85% of each premium dollar is used to pay the ever expanding cost of the medical treatment people are receiving. It's important to understand, as shown in this chart, how a premium dollar is spent .

Note: A big reason medical insurance costs are so high today - 70% or more of medical treatment dollars can be connected to conditions resulting from life style choices e.g. smoking, to many big burgers, etc.!.

Second -a chart showing how medical treatment costs have increased much faster than inflation since 1988 can be seen here.

If a person suddenly has a significant accident or unique illness the financial risk can be significant. Thus, the most effective way to solve the problem, of having a very very large hospital bill, is to transfer this big risk to a medical insurance company!

Soon be 65? Medicare only pays physician related treatment at 80% thus buying a Medicare health plan is a great way to protect yourself!

Call (860) 739-0005 today to set up a discussion on how the four parts of Medicare works. Would also be pleased to review the insurance protection options, which pay the medical treatments Medicare does not fully cover from quality companies.

Coverage under Medicare is not equivalent to a traditional employer plan since there is no out of pocket limit on the 20% physician related treatment cost sharing! What to do about this significant risk? The suggested options, include:

  • A traditional Medicare Supplement. Many supplement plans pay most of the medical treatment expenses Medicare Part A and Part B do not fully pay. A new option (June 2010) with office co-pays has a lower cost.
  • A Prescription Drug Plan. Medicare and Medicare Supplements do not pay for normal outpatient medications so its important to add a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (Part D) which can pay for most medication costs.
  • Medicare Advantage plans. This option is available from private companies, which have a contract with Medicare. The company coordinates all your medical related treatment through a network of providers and receives a fixed payment from Medicare. Most plans also cover Part D prescription expenses. Medicare Advantage plans (Part C) often add additional coverage such as preventive care. The monthly premium is usually more economical than buying a supplement plan plus a Part D plan.
